Ever notice the tiny Abraham Lincoln statue on the back of the US Penny? Most people have NOT seen it. The Lincoln Memorial penny with the tiny statue in the middle was issued from 1959 until 2008. Before 1959 the back of the penny was a design of “wheat” from 1908 to 1958. Since 2008 this memorial on the back has been replaced with a design of a shield. Recently there have also been a few limited editions of US pennies depicting scenes involving Lincoln standing, sitting on a log and others. But for 50 years they made US pennies with a little tiny Lincoln statue in the center of the Memorial on the back. There are also lots of interesting, tiny things hidden in US paper money, but that’s for a a future post on this blog.
Many people (and government officials) think the US should stop issuing the penny altogether. They feel it costs more to make than the one cent it’s supposedly worth. But try to pay for something and be a penny short. The clerk will almost always let you get away with it BUT you will either get the hairy eyeball or a moment of silent annoyance. These pennies with the memorial on the back will be seen less and less until they too will be harder to find. In 20 or 30 years when you come upon one you can point out to your friend, the little tiny man on the back of the “OLD” US penny.
