The Internet FAKE IS BACK AGAIN and How to Spot Mars This Weekend
The email hoax is flying again about Mars appearing THIS WEEKEND to be as LARGE as the Moon. It’s never going to be true. People with good intentions who know I like space keep forwarding me email chains saying Mars will “GRAZE OUR ATMOSPHERE over weekend and be the size of the moon!” 🙂 The red planet IS having a close rendezvous with Earth this weekend just as it does every few years. But, it’s still millions of miles away and to your naked eye Mars will still appear no larger than the stars. I took the photo below during a previous close rendezvous…with a TELESCOPE.
Mars getting “close” doesn’t mean it ever comes close enough to be big. As close as the two planets get every few years (for example THIS weekend) we are still millions of miles apart. This is a great time to view Mars because it’s relatively as near to Earth as it can get. But it’s STILL appears pretty small. To your eye it’s still no bigger than the stars.
If you want to find Mars in the sky this weekend I put some charts down at the bottom (to locate Mars the night of Saturday and Sunday May 21 and 22nd, 2016.) 🙂
