The Only Wildlife Refuge in the National Park System
Want to visit somewhere different? Here is a great place to walk and see creatures and birds and forget where you are. Part of the fun is the surprising location in the middle of Jamaica Bay and right next to JFK. No group leaves here without saying “I can’t believe this is so close to the city.” Like Central Park it is filled with birds you wouldn’t expect and many you would. Up to 330 species! It’s not manicured like the High Line in NYC. You’ll walk down a path among natural local plants and some foreign plant surprises, marshes, tall grass and many, many birds. Drive right to the Visitor Center and park, ask a ranger for directions or just set out. It’s called the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. It’s safe, and beautiful and you’d really never know you were in New York City.
